For those who just can't get enough Tenchi stuff, Pioneer has released the OVA BEST VOLUME 2 CD. This CD, as can be inferred from its name, contains more songs (in both English and Japanese) and BGM from the TENCHI OVAS. Those looking for TV series music should look elsewhere.
The vocals are the primary attractions here. And especially important, this is the only place one will be able to find the English versions of the songs used in the Pioneer dubs. As a result, this CD is a must for Tenchi dub fans. English versions of "I'm a Pioneer," "Sleeping Beauty on the Balcony," "Pretty Sammy the Magical Girl," "The Lonely Moon," and "Washu's Lullaby" account for half of the vocals. Some are good, and some are not.
Particularly insipid and frightening is the English version of "Pretty Sammy the Magical Girl." The lyrics are silly and just plain weird. Here's an example: "Thirsty you may be sometime, Say the magic word and, You will have a drink" However, upon closer inspection, these lyrics are a mostly literal translation of the original Japanese version sung by Yokoyama Chisa. Which just goes to show that sometimes you're better off not knowing what is being said.
One of the better English versions is "I'm a Pioneer," which is sung by Sharyn Scott, who has done other English Tenchi songs. While not quite a literal translation, the English lyrics manage to convey the message and energy of the song. And the vocals are strong, sure, and otherwise superb. The surprise English sleeper hit on this CD is "Sleeping Beauty on the Balcony," which has a nice melody and some capable vocals by Ellen Gerstell. It is a little on the syrupy side, however.
BGM on this CD is typical of Tenchi. If one has seen the OVA series, then it should be familiar. Lots of synthesizers and electronic instruments. Although that is not to say that some of it isn't quite good. "Washu's Heartache," for instance, utilizes piano and synthesizer and a host of other instruments to create a quiet, calm feeling with a slow-moving, lilting melody.
Fans of Yokoyama Chisa will be pleased, because she performs three of the Japanese vocals, including "Boku wa Motto Pioneer," "Mahou Shojo Pretty Sammy," and "Tsuki no Tragedy."
Fans of Tenchi who liked the OVA BEST CD will likely want to pick up this second volume. Collectors will of course want it to complete their collection. But casual Tenchi fans (or fans who aren't fans of Tenchi music) may not be as interested in this latest TENCHI offering.
